This World Refugee Day, join the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in helping close the distance between crisis and safety, uncertainty and opportunity, and displacement and belonging.
Around the world, families forced to flee conflict, disaster and persecution face enormous barriers to rebuilding their lives. The distance to a health clinic, a school, a safe home or a new beginning can be measured not only in miles, but in access to hope and opportunity. Through lifesaving humanitarian aid, health care, education, protection services and refugee resettlement support, the IRC helps people affected by crisis survive, recover and rebuild their futures.
This year's World Refugee Day theme, Close the Distance, reminds us that while crisis separates people from safety and stability, humanity has the power to bridge that gap. Whether someone lives three doors down or three thousand miles away, we all share the same hopes for our families and the same need for safety, dignity and opportunity.
Meet Nidal
Three years ago, Sudanese psychologist Nidal Shamshadine Abdallah fled violence in Sudan with her family. During their dangerous journey to safety, her aunt was shot and critically injured. With nearly 30 kilometers still separating them from the Chad border and no way to carry her, Nidal and her sister found a wheelbarrow and pushed their aunt the remaining distance to safety, where she finally received the medical care she needed.
Like many refugees fleeing conflict, Nidal experienced trauma, fear and uncertainty. Today, she works with the IRC at a health clinic in Chad's Farchana refugee camp, providing support to other refugees who have endured similar experiences. Having crossed that distance herself, she now helps others heal, recover and adapt to life after displacement.
Your donation will help the IRC reach refugees and displaced families with critical support when they need it most—bringing health care, protection, education and hope closer to those forced to flee.
Crisis creates distance. Humanity closes it. Donate today and help refugees rebuild their lives.
