Earthquake in Afghanistan: Help Feed Families in Crisis as Hunger Surges

của World Food Program USA

In Afghanistan, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake devastated communities across Kunar Province, with its epicenter near Jalalabad. The quake has claimed more than 800 lives and left 2,500 injured - figures that continue to rise as rescue teams struggle to reach isolated villages in the steep, mountainous terrain of Kunar Province. The quake's shallow depth, just five miles below the surface, triggered landslides and blocked access to remote communities, compounding the destruction.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is on the ground in Afghanistan, delivering high energy biscuits to the people impacted. While assessments are ongoing, WFP’s logistics team and air service through UNHAS, stand ready to support the wider humanitarian community.

This earthquake comes at a time of unprecedented food insecurity. Nearly 10 million Afghans are facing acute hunger. One in three children is stunted due to malnutrition, and two-thirds of woman-headed households cannot afford basic nutrition. As winter approaches, 15 million people will require lifesaving food assistance, many of whom will soon be cut off by snow and ice.

Your critical support will help WFP respond swiftly and effectively, not only to this emergency, but to the broader hunger crisis gripping Afghanistan.
