The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives have been shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and rebuild. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, we first helped people fleeing violence and persecution in Europe find safety in the United States.

Today, we work in over 40 countries, bringing ingenuity, fortitude and optimism to our critical work with people facing humanitarian crises. We arrive at the onset of crisis and aim to stay as long as we are needed. We deliver lasting impact by providing health care, helping children learn, and empowering individuals and communities to become self-reliant. Our work is aimed at helping clients survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. In 2024, we reached more than 36.5 million people in countries affected by crisis.

• Economic Empowerment: Economic empowerment programs help our clients gain employment, start businesses and become financially stable, ensuring they get back on their feet quickly and are accorded the dignity of self-reliance.

• Mental Health: The IRC’s mental health programs empower our clients to come to terms with their experiences and develop healthy relationships, enabling them to navigate the challenges of establishing a new home in a profoundly unfamiliar environment.

• Emergency Response: Our teams arrive on the scene of conflict or disaster within 72 hours to assess the need and delivery urgent aid to people impacted by war, violence or disaster.

• New Roots: The IRC’s New Roots program develops urban gardens, farms and markets, and offers culturally-appropriate nutrition, job skills, and leadership training that benefits our clients and their neighbors.

• Treating Malnutrition: Our simplified approach treats all forms of acute malnutrition with a single food product and point of care. We use a color-coded measuring tape to diagnose malnutrition and a nutritional peanut paste known as ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat children. Additionally, the IRC trains community health workers to bring this lifesaving care directly to hard-to-reach communities.
• Child protection: Our staff supports children through our safe spaces and other protection programs to ensure that they are not abused, neglected or exploited.
